Week 1:
POSTER DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
CONCEPTUAL POSTER DESIGN
A poster is a conventional medium to convey information to the target audience. Posters can be cluttered or straightforward. If too many colors, fonts images, or animated figures are involved in conveying information or message, it confuses the viewers.
The power of posters in generating awareness on an issue or conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or services is immense.
When you start brainstorming for your poster design idea, you need to ask yourself why you're making the poster
- Is it a poster for brand awareness?
- Is it an advertising poster?
- Is it a Public Service Announcement poster?
What is the meaning of the Public Service Announcement?
A public service announcement is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of and changing attitudes and behavior towards a social issue.
Once you've narrowed down your scope, you can start to do:
1. Research about your topic
- Study and gather related information about your topic
- Write a summary of your topic
- Highlight the key points of your summary
- Define the Title
- Define the Slogan
- Define the Details
- Define the Call for Action
2. Define your concept
- Create a section for each content (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
- Sketch your mockup poster
- Fill with details
3. Start to develop your design projects
- Draft the digital posters based on your sketch
- Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design
- Apply color, typography, textures & effects
- Finalize your design with color correction
Creative posters where meaningful information comes wrapped with striking pictures and images
The creative poster is made up of four key features:
- Title
- Graphic
- Text
- White space
1. Title, the title is a descriptive indicator of the contents of the poster, and it should not exceed two lines of text
2. Text, The text should describe the message clearly but not overloaded
3. Graphic, Graphic must appear in context with the main text. Choose high-resolution images (300 dpi or higher).
4. White Space, white pace creates "breathing room" within the poster, which helps viewers avoid feeling overwhelmed by the information being presented.
Layout, flow, and color affect the order and style of these four key features.
1. Layout, there are many design layouts. For our project, we suggest a graphics-centered layout.
2. Flow, flow coordinates with how readers' eyes move around the different sections of the poster. Maintain Hierarchy while displaying your message.
3. Color, color draws readers' gaze and defines the different sections of your poster.
Will My Design Create an Impact?
- What is the purpose of my poster design?
- Am I clearly depicting the idea of my poster design?
- Does my poster convey its message meaningfully and beautifully?
COLOR THEORY
Color Theory
Colour theory is both the science and art of using color. It explains how humans perceive color, and the colors of the message communicate artistically and emotionally.
RGB vs CMYK
Cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) are the primary colors of printing.
RGB color is used to display on your computer screen
RGB: Additive color mixing model
Colour is created by mixing red, green, and blue light sources of various intensities.
TVs, screens, and projectors use red, green, and blue (RGB) as their primary colors.
CMYK: Subtractive color mixing model
Colour is created by the subtraction of light.
The CMYK color system is the color system used for printing.
Hue, Shade, Tint, Tone
Hue: is the most basic of color terms and denotes an object’s color.
Shade: is a hue to which black has been added. For example, red + black = burgundy.
Tint: is a hue to which white has been added. For example, red + white = pink.
Tone: is a color to which black and white (or grey) have been added.
Color HarmonyThe arrangement of the colors in design is the most attractive and effective way for users’ perception.

Monochromatic
Monochromatic is hard to make a mistake and create a distasteful color scheme.
AnalogousAnalogous are 3 colors located right next to each other on the color wheel.
Complementary
Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel.
This scheme is opposite to analogous and monochromatic since it aims to produce high contrast.
Split-ComplementarySplit-Complementary
involves the use of three colors. Start with one color, find its complement, and then use the two colors on either side of it.
Triadic colorsTriadic colors are evenly spaced around the color wheel and tend to be very bright and dynamic.
The Psychology of colorColors have an extraordinary ability to provoke specific emotions for each individual and to attract people’s attention and harmony simultaneously.
Warm vs CoolDraw a line through the center of the wheel, and you’ll separate the warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) from cool colors (blues, greens, purples).
Warm Colors
Warm colors often evoke feelings of happiness, optimism, and energy.
However, yellow, red, and orange can also have an attention-grabbing effect and signal danger or make you take action (think to stop signs, hazard warnings, and barrier tape).
Cool colorsCool colors are usually calming and soothing but can also express sadness.
Purple is often used to help spark creativity as it’s a mixture of blue (calm) and red (intense).
Black
Black is often used sparingly – such as for text – but it works quite well as a primary color element (like for backgrounds).
Black adds an air of sophistication and elegance, and also a mystery, though with much bolder confidence.
White
As primary, white gives off an impression of clean, virtuous, healthy.
White pairs well with just about anything, making it ideal as a secondary color.
INSTRUCTION
We were tasked to do some research regarding this project that we are going to make. The theme will be "Mental health affected by covid-19"
Here are some instructions that are given by Mr. Martin that we need to answer.
How are you as an individual affected by Covid-19? Physically or mentally? Are they related?
Many people are affected by Covid-19 including the millennials. We have seen many young adult facing depression because of the side effects of Covid-19. This virus doesn’t only influence people’s physical health, but also mental health. Having quarantine and staying at home a lot means that we lack interactions and entertainment leading towards negative effects regarding your mental health.
It is reported that young people were 30% to 80% more likely to report symptoms of depression or anxiety than adults in Belgium, France, and the United States in March 2021. There are many reasons why this could happen, for example, some people who consider social activities as an escape from their toxic family can no longer run away from their home. Another example it is now becoming difficult for some young adults who are looking for jobs and part-time as the opportunities are now reduced due to Covid.
Personally, as a student, I feel like Covid has affected my life a lot, positively and negatively. I wouldn’t say that Covid has affected me all negatively, there are some positive outcomes well such as getting to know my family closer, focusing on myself better, also improve myself as an individual. However, I couldn’t deny there are many negative effects as well such as not being able to see my friend, not being able to travel or go out as much, and the most important thing is how it complicates my flight and stay in Malaysia.
To conclude, there are many young adults who are currently facing depression and anxiety. The last thing we can do is fight it with our ambition, trust, and positive will. We are all hoping that the Covid era will someday come to an end, and let us fight towards that happy ending
Research online about "Young adult's mental health affected by Covid 19".
View posters from Pinterest and Pin the ones that you think is interesting.
I like how this poster is provoking young people nowadays. Teenagers are mostly addicted to social media now and this poster shows how they can be sick without daily consumption of social media.
I like how this poster is provoking for abusive fathers. It is written that "He has his mother's eyes" but then his eye is swollen, which shows that the mother must have had the same eye. This concludes that both of them are victims of abusive households.
For this poster, I love how this is informing people that depression is not something that can be settled as easily as switching the lights on and off. Depression is much more complicated and it requires much more effort to overcome this problem.
After looking at these posters, I finally came up with an idea where I thought might be good. I want to point out to the people that despite teenagers having anxieties or feeling depressed, they still have to attend classes which made them forced to put on a smile. Here are my poster sketches:
In this poster, I’m trying to make people aware that the smile we see online such as in zoom, teams, or any kind of meeting aren’t always true. Sometimes we are forced to smile behind the camera because there are so many things we are stressed out about at home but aren’t able to express. Since the pandemic, some young adults have been forced to stay at home for quarantine and it may increase the amount of stress. Despite all of that, they are still required to attend school or college behind the camera that leads them towards a fake smile.
For the title, I put on Virtual Happiness because they show smiles in front of the camera, but they are actually suffering from depression behind it.
For the slogan, I put: Show your "smile" to the world, for sarcasm. Meaning that they need to pretend to be happy in front of people to be accepted.
I also planned to put "Your mental health is also important" to show that the poster supports mental health for teenagers.
so here are the pictures I found to make the poster:
I used this picture from the nose to her head to show her tears.

I used this picture for the clothing because the previous picture had a hand covering half of her face n her hoodie, and I wanted to get rid of it.
Next, I used this picture for the smile inside the phone.
Lastly, I used this picture for the phone holding hand.

END RESULT FOR POSTER 1 |
This is the end result for the first poster. However, when I showed this to Mr. Martin, he said that this doesn't really show that it relates to Covid-19. He said that people can't really tell that it has something to do with Covid-19.
After receiving the feedback, I decided that I would look for a new idea.
I found an idea where most teenagers don't really talk about their mental health problems and tend to keep it to themselves. So I had an idea to relate it to Covid 19, and this is my sketch for the second poster:
In this poster, I used "LOOK FOR HELP" as the title to ask people with depression to quickly seek help. I want to have the model in the middle sitting while holding their leg showing that they are not feeling okay. I also planned on putting a bit of doodle and mindmap in the back to support the idea of Covid-19. As for the slogan, I will put it under the title.
Here is the picture that I used for the poster:
I think this picture looks perfect for the poster that I wanted to make. So firstly I added a bit of Vibrance and I adjusted the hue/saturation. I also added a shadow around the picture to emphasize the sad atmosphere.

Progress #1 |
After that, I put on the title. I found an idea on putting the O in the "LOOK" behind the girl to make it look more appealing. By that, I need to cut the girl from the picture and then put the letter O behind her cut picture. I also use the color red for the "HELP" to highlight the people that they need help as soon as possible.
 |
Progress #2 |
Here is when I put the slogan and the website to let people start making their change. I put apostrophes and bold the "TOGETHER" to highlight that everything is possible if we can work together.
 |
Progress #3 |
For the last progress, I added mindmaps around her to show the things that could have started the depression during Covid-19 for the teenagers.
 |
Progress #4
|
the last-minute decision, I decided to add a cloudy doodle in the girl's head to indicate that she's feeling blue.

FEEDBACK
From the first poster, Mr. Martin said that it doesn't really look like it is related to Covid-19. He also said that I need to change the title and the slogan so that people will realize that it is actually a poster related to Covid-19. I also realized from looking at my friends' work that this mistake is pretty common. So I decided to make a new poster that shows the audience that the mental health poster that I made is related to Covid-19 by adding mindmaps around her.
REFLECTION From this project, I learned that making a poster is not an easy thing. Finding the right idea for mental health that is related to Covid-19 is really hard and most people make mistakes there. The poster that I showed was not related to Covid-19 and it has to be changed. From this, I also learned that editing in photoshop is not as easy as I thought. Sometimes when we edit out the picture, there are still some parts that might accidentally look unreal, and sometimes it is very noticeable that it is not good to be shown to the audience.
