LECTURE
SENSE OF PLACE:
In the simplest description, a designer's role is to solve problems with effective visual communication.
"Problems" that a designer solve are plenty, ranging from personal goals to community events, and from corporate functions to world-changing projects, all through creative, visual communication means.
The Importance of Observation:
Now, how does the designer "know" what imagery or content to include in the design? we understand that the client informs the designer of the purpose of the project, but, when it comes to visual ideas, how do designers work?
This is where observation comes in. Being observant means being attentive to your surroundings, paying attention to the details, and being analytical about them.
For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings, and such.
Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting.
If you noticed, the video also mentioned the word senses. Our senses are important for us to know, feel, understand, analyze, and even plan what we want to do.
Observation is important to designers as it enables them to see "problems", as well as get ideas for solutions to those problems.
Sense of Place:
As shown in the example of the island Bazaar, we can get the hint of island life, the cool breeze of the air, the warmth of the sun all through careful observation and documentation of the designer's surroundings.
Besides that, you will also observe that suitable design principles are applied to create effective visuals in those Instagram feeds of Island Bazaar.
Now think about the place you're in now or a place you had spent some time at previously, or, a place that had created a lasting memory in you.
How do you express your sense of that place?
Start by documenting your observations, photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.
island Bazaar's Instagram posts are just an example of how a sense of place can be expressed in photography. There are other mediums you can explore, such as collage, illustration, scale model, the possibilities out there are endless.
INSTRUCTION
In this task, the self-portrait allows the student to investigate both historical and contemporary forms of self-expression and also to review the design principles covered and thus better inform their particular direction.
Visual Research:
After hearing the lectures about the task, I decided to find inspiration through my gallery. I tried to find memorable places I used to visit.
One of my favorite places that I used to visit is Bali. Here is one of my favorite pictures I found from Bali:
After some research, I recall that I really like to imagine being in Bali when I am enjoying my time in the bathroom. I feel like taking my time in the bathtub is very much calming and it feels very refreshing while imagining the picture of Bali.
After knowing what I wanted to make, I did a little research on Pinterest to look for inspiration. Here are the few pictures I found as references:
Here is the vibe that I am looking for.
I wanted to tell the audience that the bathroom is one of the places that I really enjoy being alone in. I usually dream of going to a tropical place while enjoying my time in the bathtub as if I was sitting on the beach. I also like to smell the fresh scent from my soap and shampoo which makes it even better.
I also realized that it doesn't have to be in my own bathroom, but it can be in any bathroom as long as it has a bathtub. Sometimes I also enjoy sitting in the bathtub while listening to beach or ocean sounds to get a better experience.
This is the sketch that I made:
I want the bathtub to be visible and I feel like this is the right angle. After getting the sketch, I finally trace it so I have a better image.
After getting the full image, I finally added a few plants sketch. I also decided to go for the color pink and green as the color palette so it suits the theme tropical.
This is the end result:
FEEDBACK
From listening to others' feedback, I learned that I need to pay attention to how I want others to view my art and make it so others could understand the meaning of my art.
REFLECTION
Experience: I found this project to be really fun I got to draw any place I like with how I imagine it will be. I got to explore my imagination as well as practice applying all of the design principles. Although I admit the first try I was really confused about what I should make, but throughout the process, I can finally figure out what I to make.
Observation: I observed that it is not easy to make an observation about a place. We need to make sure that we understand what we are going to make and how we are going to connect it to the things that we want to express.
Findings: I found that looking for the right place to draw is really hard since there are so many memorable places that we have visited. I also find it hard because some places that are memorable just doesn't seem to have a unique feeling in my heart which makes it hard for me to express myself.
