LECTURE
VISUAL TECHNIQUES : CHIAROSCURO
Chiaroscuro: Chiaroscuro refers to the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface. ("chiaro"= bright, "scuro"= dark)
Why is Chiaroscuro is used?
- Increase dramatic tension
- Create sensational effect
- Pull your attention to a subject in an intense way
- Create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive spaces
It's also a great study of form and value practice
RHYTHM & MOVEMENT
Having rhythm in art is one of the most difficult aspects to achieve/explain
good rhythm = good movement
Basic visual elements to create movement and shape and lines
INSTRUCTION
In this task, we were asked to make a minimalist poster based on an existing narrative from a movie. After creating the poster, we need to create a looping animated gif.
After knowing what to do, I did a little research on several movies. I decided that I will go for a well-known movie instead so it is easier for everyone to recognize my poster.
Because I really like animated movies, I decided that I would pick one from Disney's movie. I looked for several references from Disney movies until I finally decided that I wanted to go for Rapunzel's movie, Tangled.
At first, I wanted to create a scene where Rapunzel was looking outside after singing the song "when will my life begin". I created this sketch where Rapunzel was looking at the lanterns from her tower.
However, I soon realized that this scene apparently doesn't exist. So I tried to look for another iconic scene. In the end, I decided that I will go with the scene where Rapunzel and Flynn are singing together in the boat lifting up lanterns together.
Here is the sketch that I made:
After I made the sketch, I decided to color it. Here is the first coloring that I used.
However, after looking at the first color, I was not so satisfied, so I decided to look for another color.
After trying on the second coloring, I decided that I will go for this one. The next step is to move it to Adobe Illustrator. Here is my progression:
Here is where I made the background.
Here is when I added the title Tangled.
Next, I added the lanterns.
Lastly, I added the boat with Rapunzel and Flynn in it.
Here are the total layers that I used.
After going through several steps, here is my end result for the Minimalist poster.

After making the poster, the next thing we're going to make is the animated gif. In this decisive moment, I wanted to create Rapunzel and Flynn letting go of their lanterns and then holding hands afterward.
For the animation method, I decided that I will use the frame-by-frame method in Adobe Photoshop. Here are the frames that I have made in Illustrator with a total of 67 ish frames.
Here is how it looks in Photoshop.
After going through several frames, here is the final result:

FEEDBACK
From listening to others' feedback, I realized that I need to make sure on the poster that I make. I need to make sure that it is a decisive moment, not just a mere poster. That is how I realized that my original sketch was not a decisive moment. After finishing my gif, I found a problem in saving my animation, and Miss Jennifer taught me how to lower the resolution without lowering the quality.
REFLECTION
Experience: Making this poster is really fun for me. Firstly I got to explore many features in Adobe Illustrator, unlike the previous exercise where I can only use several shapes. I also like how we are able to learn how to animate a poster to make it look more appealing.
Observation: I realized that making the animation is not easy at all. We need to pay attention to the movement and make sure that it doesn't look wrong. Because once we have created it, it will be hard to revise it and most likely will have to start from the beginning again.
Findings: I found that creating a decisive moment poster doesn't have to be very detailed and good-looking, what's important is that we are able to catch the audience's eye and they are able to tell which scene we are implying to.
