DIGITAL SURREALISM
Realism
Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."
Surrealism
A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality
Surrealism
Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art (French for "super-realism") filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.
Fueled by the teachings of Freud and the rebellious work of Dada artists, surrealists like Salvador Dalí promoted free association and dream imagery.
Dadaism
An anti war art movement with art works that is satirical and nonsensical in nature.
Salvador Dalí was a Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker known for exploring subconscious imagery.
What is Digital Surrealism?
Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves.
In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.
How to start creating Surrealism artworks?
Dream-like scenes and symbolic images, Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions,
Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects, Primitive or child-like designs
Capturing Your Dream
1. Sketch It Out Take a piece of paper and pen/pencil or a tablet and start to sketch. Draw your vision out roughly. Don't finesse any details yet, but just lay out key points of your vision.
2. Find Reference Images
Gathering reference images will help you greatly in realizing your new idea. Gather images that directly relate to what you have in mind.
Mindset During Creation
1. "Does this look real?"
Surrealism is at its best when it's convincing enough that it could be real, however we obviously know that the subject matter you are creating is nonexistent, thus is not real.
2. Make it happen to the best of your ability.
When you try to approach something challenging, you will learn the skills you may need for next time to make it work. The worst thing you can do is be afraid and back off from your idea, because you would never learn that way.
Photoshop makes it easier than ever to create surrealist images, requiring just a modicum of photomontage skill to produce impressive results.
INTRO OF AFTER EFFECT
What is After Effects?
Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.
After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.
This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene
What is After Effects?
Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story.
You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.
Compositing Layers in
Photoshop
Basically Photoshop is a platform to compositing the layers.
All the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organize and easy to be animated in
After Effects.
Compositing Layers in After Effects
Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application.
Basically we can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into After Effects.
All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator.
After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
EXPOSURE: In photography, exposure is the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film.
The main parts of the camera:
1. Camera body:
Shutter
Image sensor
LCD screen
2. Camera Lens
Aperture/ Iris
The camera body is a light proof box.
1. IRIS
2. SHUTTER SPEED
3. ISO
There are only two camera settings that affect the actual “luminous exposure” of an image: shutter speed and aperture. The third setting, camera ISO, also affects the brightness of your photos.
1. IRIS: Iris/Aperture is control the flow of light entering the lens.
IRIS: Iris/Aperture is measured by f-stop, indicated by sequence of f-number: f/1, f/1.4, f/2 , f/ 2.8, f/ 4, f/ 5.6, f/ 8, f/ 11, f/ 16, f/22 , f/32..
The lower the f-number, the larger the lens opening.
2. SHUTTER: The shutter is a small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film.
3. ISO: Originally referred to the sensitivity of film—it's "light gathering" ability. For digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity—the signal gain—of the camera's sensor.
ISO: The common ISO camera settings are: 100, 200, 400, 640, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400….
The lower the number of ISO the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.
LENS PERSPECTIVE
The are wide angle lens, standard lens and tele lens.
Different lenses are designed for different for different purposes. Lenses can be categorized by FOCAL LENGTH.
FOCAL LENGTH: The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa. Focal length is the measurement (in millimeters) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera’s sensor.
DEPTH OF FIELD: The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus. The smaller the aperture you use, the greater the depth of field.
Wide angle lenses are ideal for fitting a large area into your frame.
Wide angle lens is especially useful for landscape photography or street photography. With wide angle lenses, almost everything is in focus, unless your subject is very close to the lens.
Images created by standard lens are perceived as more natural than those taken with other types of camera lenses.
Tele lenses are great for isolating a subject that is far away.
Tele lenses allow you to photograph subjects from a distance thanks to their magnification.
DSLR vs SMARTPHONE
PRO
Familiar with device
Good quality
Easy to learn
CON
Still limited
Good but not great
Non-ergonomic shape
DSLR cameras are designed to capture images. Phones are designed to carry out a multitude of functions
Phone cameras are very limited by size. The size of the lens and the size of the sensor that captures the photos. Entry-level DSLR have much larger lenses and sensors than mobile phones do.

BIOGRAPHY OF MY OWN
Tell us about yourself?
My name is Luisa Audrey. I am currently 18 years old and my birthday is in February 22nd which makes me a Pisces. I am a very shy introverted individual who enjoys my time alone or maybe with the people I’m close to. Beside that, I am also known for being a softie with a loving personality, at least that’s what my friends say. One thing that I really enjoy in life is art. I like to create something, I like to draw, I like to sing and play some instruments as well.
What is your passion?
My passion is pretty much obvious, which is art. Ever since I was a kid, I have been enjoying drawing a lot. Throughout the time, I learned other things such as creating DIY, singing and playing instruments. That is the reason why I’m taking Design in Creative Media in Taylor’s University, to deepen my knowledge regarding art and to achieve my dream.
My career dream is to be successful with my own creative business with stuffs that I made by myself. Other than that, I also have several life goals such as having multiple talents, being able to travel around the world, and living a happy life with my loved one.
What’s motivate you to achieve your dream?
There are many things that motivates me. Firstly would be my own goal and my own standard. I have always wanted to make my own business with the design that I created and be successful. I also look up on talented and confident people a lot, and they motivates me to change myself to the better. Secondly would be my family, they’re the people who have been supporting me the whole time and I want to show them that the support they showed doesn’t go to waste. Thirdly would be the people who are close to me and the people I love. Beside my family, my friends has been showing me lots of support as well and that motivates me a lot to become better.
How do you want to visualize your dream into an artwork?
My dream is something that is pretty much unrealistic for me at this point. I realized that I am still too far to achieve that dream. However, the way I portray my dream is very dreamy, ethereal, and beautiful.
ABOUT MY WORK
Tell us about your work
In the sketch, you can see me with my eyes covered with flowers. I’m also holding a mirror and there’s going to be my reflection there. I also put clouds to cover half of my body to show more of the ethereal idea plus a moon.
What is the concept behind it?
The concept of my work is ethereal aesthetic. Ethereal means extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world.
What is the message you want people to understand it?
I want people to understand that this is what I always want to become. One of my hobby is day-dreaming and I want people to understand that it is okay to dream and it is okay to imagine on becoming something you always want to become,
What is your motto/ quote?
Embrace your dream
For the mood board, here are some of the references that I found and I planned to use from Pinterest.
Here are the pictures that I planned to apply in my work.
Here are the aesthetic that I planned on using:
I decided on using an ethereal aesthetic like what I found here. After that, I created a sketch for my work.
Personally, I am not very comfortable showing my whole face, so I decided to cover half of it with flowers. I also added a mirror in front of me to add more of my picture.
I was confident with this sketch so I immediately made the digital version and here are the progression:
Firstly, the original color of the sky is blue, and here I wanted to make it pink, so I adjusted the color with hue/saturation and vibrance.
After that, I edited my picture to fit in to the poster. Here are the original picture that I use for this project:
I then added the flowers just like in my sketch and the butterflies as additional elements.
After that I put on the mirror and added a bit of reflection light there. I also added the white building and the moon like how I planned in my sketch. However this time I changed the half moon into a full moon because I planned on making it rotating.
This is the final result for the poster where I have added fabrics behind me and also flower fields in front and up there for aesthetic purpose.
Mr. Martin also mentioned that I did a good job on the poster.
FINAL RESULT POSTER:
Here is the my statement:
I always like ethereal aesthetic and I have always dreamt about being a fairytale character such as fairy or princess. In this project, I took the opportunity to express myself as well as tell people that it is okay to embrace your dream. There is nothing to be embarrassed about, we are all free to imagine and be happy with what we want to be.
Here is my process in Adobe Illustrator.
Personally, the hardest part for me is to animate the butterflies. I needed to search for it in Youtube on how to animate a butterfly and the process is not easy. I need to divide the butterfly into several parts to be able to make the wings flap.
However, after a few struggles, I managed to finish it.
I also added a song that that has a vibe of cottage core in Premier Pro. Here is the end result of the animated poster that I have uploaded in Youtube.
FEEDBACK
Mr. Martin said that we need to pay attention to the time management when doing our work. We need to follow the time instruction in order to work in an efficient way. Mr. Martin also mentioned that I am doing a good job in my poster.
REFLECTION
Personally, for me this project is very challenging for me. I had a hard time in so many things. Firstly, it took me so long to decide on the theme that I wanted to use because I needed to consider lots of things. I didn't want to make it too hard so I'm able to proceed well. Later on, I also found a hard time in taking the pictures. I borrowed my father's camera but found that all of the pictures that I took didn't come out well. So I changed to my phone camera and managed to get some decent shots. I then quickly proceed to the digitalization because we had no enough time. The process in Photoshop was not that hard, until I went to After effect. The process of me learning this software was really long because I was still very new to it. However, I managed to finish it and turned out I'm quite happy with the final product.
