In this task, we were instructed to make a sticker of greetings or social message in telegram that is relevant for the campus community.

For the greetings, I chose "Happy Valentine's Day". First of all before I started the sketch, I looked for few references through Pinterest. Here are some references that I took to create my sticker.

SKETCHES:

I made a total 5 sketches:

Personally, I like the one on the bottom right. However, when I showed the sketches to Mr. Vinod, and he told me to go with the bottom right. He told me that the one on the bottom right is too illustration based, and we are supposed to express it through the typeface.

Mr. Vinod also told me to smaller the ribbon so we can use the rectangle square effectively.

B&W DIGITALIZED

For the digitalized version, I made 2 version, the first one is the one that Mr. Vinod has chose, and the other one is the one that I liked.

Fig 2.2, version 1 layers, 11.18.2021

For this one, I shortened the ribbon and make the texts taller and more cramped. I also decided to put the Taylor logo inside the heart that represents the word "A".

I also added more elements like the small hearts outside the focal point as supports. I also added outline behind the sticker.

For the second one, I made the one that I liked. (Just in case :D)

Fig 2.5, version 2 layers, 11.18.2021

For this one I also made it slightly more cramped so I can utilize the space effectively.

For this I added few sparkles as well for aesthetic purpose. Same like the previous sticker, I also added background.

COLORED DIGITALIZED

For the colored one, I decided to use 3 color palettes to see more variation and so I could choose on which one is better. Here are the 3 color palettes that I picked:

Fig 2.8, version 1 coloring progress, 11.18.2021

For this version coloring concept, I made the "Happy" and "Day" darker color to math the light background, and I made the word "Valentine" light.

I also added few elements such as the highlight on the corner of each ribbon and on top of the Taylor's heart.

For this version, I used the same concept for the words, and the color of the big heart is apparently the same as the small Taylor's heart from the other version. As for the sparkles, I will always use color yellow but depending on the color tone.

I then applied the same concept for every color palette. Here are the end result for all versions:

I showed this to Mr. Vinod, and he said that it is better to go with the middle top. He also suggested me to change the font to ITC Garamond condensed. I tried to use ITC Garamond book condensed, but I don't really like it because it looks more bold that I feel like the "Happy" is more emphasized than the "Valentine's". I also don't see much difference and that's why I decided to just stay with the original one.

Mr. Vinod also told me that I should change the color for the "Valentine's" because it is too light. He said I should change it to the same shade as the ribbon's shadow.

Here is result:

ANIMATION:

For the gif part, I planned on moving the highlights to make it look like it is shiny. Beside the highlights, I also planned on scaling the size of the hearts into bigger and smaller to make them look like a beating heart.

I also added a last minute change where I added more highlight under the word "Valentine" for aesthetic purpose. I also decided to fade in and out the word "Valentine's".

In the process of creating the video in after effect, I bumped into several problems. I ended up looking for way out through Youtube.

Here is also the urgent shape that I created in after effect to finalize the animation:

After I'm done with the animation, I tried to save it to .tgs format but couldn't find the way to do so. Because Mr. Vinod said it is okay if we don't transfer it to telegram, I saved the video into .gif

Here is the first result before the revision:

FEEDBACK

Week 11:

General Feedback: Mr. Vinod mentioned that make sure we utilize the whole rectangle space effectively. Therefore, we need to make a design that fits better to the 512px x 512px square. He also said that there shouldn't be too much illustration since we need to express it through the typeface.
Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod asked me to choose use the bottom right design because it is less graphical element based. I suggested the bottom left but he said it is too illustration based, not really expressed through the typography.

Week 12:

General Feedback: Mr. Vinod mentioned that we need to focus more on the typeface expression. He also mentioned that make sure the background of the sticker exists and it is making an outline of the sticker.
Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod asked me to choose the top middle sticker. He also suggested me to use ITC Garamond Book Condensed, however I don't really like that one because the "Happy" might appear too bold compared to the "Valentine's" which is the word that I'm trying to emphasize. Aside from that, Mr. Vinod also asked me to change the color of the word "Valentine's" to darker color.

REFLECTION

Experience: Personally, I really like this project because we finally got to play with colors. I find this project more like fun rather than challenging, even though it can't be denied that of course I found several problems throughout the process. However, I am pretty much happy with how my sticker came out. I also learned how to create the animation in after effect and even though it was a bit hard, I still managed to enjoy the process of animating it.

Observation: From this project, I find that expressing an expression is not so easy through typography. We mostly lean on the graphical elements unconsciously because it is the best support to express our greetings. We also have to pay attention to the size of our sticker and make sure we utilize the space as effectively as possible since it is going to affect the looks in telegram.

Finding: I found expressing through words is not as easy as it looks like. Also, because we haven't been working with colors in Typography class, I also feel like finding the right color for our typography is a bit hard. As I have mentioned, it is difficult as well to come up with a design that could fill up the space of the entire square, which in the end it would led us to stretching the design.

Typographic Design Form and Communication

A Multidimensional Language:

The typographic message is verbal, visual, and vocal. While typography is read and interpreted verbally, it may also be viewed and interpreted visually, heard and interpreted audibly. It is a dynamic communication medium. In this sense, early twentieth-century typography became a revolutionary form of communication, bringing new expressive power to the written word.

Among the movements affected by Futurism were Dadaism in France, Switzerland, and Germany; de Stijl in Holland; and Constructivism in Russia. Each of these historical movements has had a penetrating effect upon typography.

As a dynamic representation of verbal language, typography must communicate. This functional role is fulfilled when the receiver of a typographic message clearly and accurately understands what is in the mind of the transmitter.
