LECTURES

Shot Size

The shot size determines how large the area that’s visible within the frame.
1. Extreme wide shot
2. Wide shot
3. Medium wide shot
4. Medium shot
5. Medium close-up shot
6. Close-up shot
7. Extreme close-up shot

Camera Angle

Composition: Rule of thirds divides the frame into thirds both horizontally and vertically. The points where the vertical and horizontal lines cross are aesthetically pleasing spots to place subjects or to have
perspective lines converge.

Facial modelling is best when subject is turned 45o (3⁄4 angling) to the camera. Front and side of the face, if properly lighted will appear round and eyes are displayed fully.

Camera height is as important as camera distance and angle but often disregarded. Artistic, dramatic and of the camera to the subject.

Screen Direction

Dynamic Screen Direction: Constant screen travel depicts subject motion in one direction only . A series of shots of a person walking, a car driving, a plane flying – should move in the same direction to show progression.

Storytelling in Film

Story: The set of all the events in cause-effect relationship occuring in time and space, both the ones explicitly presented and those the viewer infers, constitutes the story.

Plot: Everything visibly and audibly present in the film, and material that is extraneous to the story world.

Plot  Segmentation
The best method for understanding a film’s narrative system is to create a plot segmentation, a scene-by-scene outline of the entire film.

3 – ACT Structure
Beginning:
Setup / introduction of a story
Middle:
Confrontation of a problem
End
Resolution of problems

Story Boarding

Storyboarding =Visualization

When the scene has a complicated action involved or few perspective point of view, storyboard is the most effective way to map out the scene.

Purpose of story boarding
  • Show IMPORTANT ACTION
  • Continuity/ Editing Point
  • Shot Composition
  • Indicate CAMERA ANGLE/ MOVEMENT
  • Map out the scene

INSTRUCTIONS

For the first activity, we tried to merge bunch of cut videos at class.

For the second activity, it is basically the same as the first, but the videos are not in the right order and we need to find the right orders ourselves.

Stop Motion Videos:

1. Under The Winter Sun

Comparing to the other 2 stop motion videos, this is by far the best for me. It has the simplest style and the shortest duration, yet it still gives me a big impact. The main reason for this is the story plot. Thanks to the story and the simplicity of the character, they just made a very memorable stop-motion video.

2. Negative Space

This is the second best video that I found. The art style is much more complicated and the animation looks smoother as well. It is a very well made stop motion for me. The story first came out as pretty melancholic, however the funny part was the plot twist at the end of the video. It sure made the story so much more interesting.

3. Archie and His Pet Dog Go on a Long Journey

For this stop motion, the art style is pretty good as well. Animation is not as smooth as the second however I really like the atmosphere of the whole video. The story is very heart warming and it gives me a feeling of home. Overall, it is a nice stop motion.

FRAMING EXERCISE

For this exercise, we were tasked to shoot a very short video, only around 3 until 5 seconds based on the angle that was given. I did it in school with my friends Azka and Zachary. It was pretty fun, we got to know each other by being in the same group. We also tried different types of pose and background.

In the end, we have to compile the videos that we shoot. Here are some of the footage:

After I finished compiling all the videos that I shoot, I started to edit them and put them into one video. I decided to add song to make it more interesting. Here is the end result:

LALINA EDITING

For this exercise, it was pretty simple. Since we were just introduced about premier pro, we had a pretty simple tutorial about it and a simple exercise as well. For this assignment, we were tasked to arrange the videos that we have watched about "Lalina" and then edit out the guy on this particular part.

It was pretty simple and Mr. Martin already gave the tutorial, here is the end result:

DANCING VIDEO EXERCISE

I actually was not looking forward to this exercise just because I had to dance. Why dancing though ;-;
Well it could end up pretty cool... if you can dance... but I kinda suck at it.

Anyways, I was in the same ground as Esther and Michelle. We decided to choose songs from tiktok with easy dance so that we didn't have to dance a lot. We chose the easy one which is "The Weekend" by SZA.

Here are some of the footage:

We filmed using Michelle's phone. When I tried to upload it to premier pro, it was very very laggy. I struggle a lot doing it because I already asked my friends about the problem and they couldn't fix it as well. In the end I decided that I was gonna edit with filmora.

After I was done editing, I realized that filmora has a watermark, in order to remove that we had to pay. We ended up paying for cheap filmora that can upload without watermark. But I couldn't open the old file there.

In the end, I just decided to use Premier pro but divided the video into 3. Even after splitting the process, I still had to compress my files 2 times because they were very large.

Even then, after I received feedback from Mr. Martin, I couldn't fix it anymore because it was very laggy. I couldn't see the video properly even after I rendered everything.

This is one of the progress. In the end I just edited 2 times, I couldn't fix it either, not a very pleasant experience. However, I still managed to finish and this is the end result:

SHOOTING EXERCISE

For the shooting exercise, we were divided into 2 groups. One will shooting on Wednesday and the other one on Friday. Since I have class on Wednesday, I joined the Friday group.

I became the art director for the group with Michelle. My work was to reach out to our actor and actress and decide on the outfit that would look good for them in the shooting. To be honest, I thought my work will be more than that like decided the place together with the cameraman, or maybe designing the place or etc. However, I didn't have much work, all of the work were pushed towards the camera man, producer, and the producer's assistance.

I just tried to help out with everything they needed. Here are the the footage:

In the end, it was a fun experience and we got to know each other pretty well. This is the final result of the compilation:

FEEDBACK

Mr. Martin told me to do a bit of color correction on my dancing video.

REFLECTION

It was a challenge, especially because I realized that my premier pro is dumb. The first few exercises were fine, I could do all of them just fine. However when it comes to editing heavy videos, my premier pro couldn't take it. It's weird because my friends could edit them just fine, that means it was only for my laptop. I did learn few stuff while doing these exercises, I could see why it is helpful, but I'm not a big fan of taking videos and editing videos. In the end, I managed to finish everything.
