LECTURE

  • Data collection is a term used to describe a process of  preparing and collecting data.
  • Systematic gathering of  data for a particular purpose from various sources, that has been systematically observed, recorded, organized.
  • Data are the basic inputs to any decision making process in business
Qualitative Research Categories

Qualitative Research
  • In-depth, insight generating
  • Non-numerical
  • Directional
Common Techniques
  • Personal interviews (depth, one-on-one)
  • Focus groups (8-12) and mini-groups (3-6)
Quantitative Research Categories
  • Stratified or Segment Random Sampling
  • Samples on the basis of  a representative strata or segment
  • Still random but more focused
  • May give more relevant information
  • Maybe more cost effective
Quota Sampling
  • Again –by segment
  • Not randomly selected
  • Specific number or each segment are interviewed, etc.
  • May not be full representative
  • Cheaper method

INSTRUCTION

This task gonna be the biggest challenge I have ever received. The amount of stress I got was unusual. There were so many things to be considered. It was so hard to explain the meaning of UX and the issue that I was trying to solve to elderly. The language barrier was also a problem, therefore I made 2 versions. I also had a hard time finding respondents since most elderly don't want to go through such hassle. Moreover, my younger friends did not wanna help as well.

I managed to get 80+ respondents in the end after several tries. Even the data sorting were not simple at all. I need to sort so many data and my questions had a lot of branches made it longer to finish. I submitted it late for few weeks but I managed to submit 200 pages of powerpoint slides.

FEEDBACK

Week 9:
Ms. Hayati told me that I should make a questionnaire but guide them like it is an interview at the same time. So the interview would be a buffer to my questionnaire

Week 10:
Miss Hayati told me again that I should continue on with the questionnaire and not change the instruments. It is still a questionnaire however there is a slight qualitative as a buffer.

Week 11:
Ms. Hayati told me that she was willing to help me by sending the questionnaire to her friends. She also told me to try to ask for help from people who are actually knowledgable.

Week 12:
Ms. Hayati told me that she had given my questionnaire to her friends. She told me that she has sent some of the feedback that her friends gave for me. Ms. Hayati then also encouraged me to make the second questionnaire for the second round.

Week 13:
This week Ms. Hayati suggested I use google translate to translate the whole questionnaire first and then translate again for the second time so it will be easier.

REFLECTION

The hardest assignment I have ever did period.

I do not know where I did wrong. I took so many time to finish the whole thing and it was so stressful. Not gonna lie I sometimes think that everything would be so much better if it were not for elderly. Until now, I still cannot believe how this elderly has made my work so much harder. If it weren't for elderly, I did not have to make 2 questionnaire, I wouldn't have to translate, I wouldn't have to explain so hard about the meaning of UI/UX, the questions would be different as well.

This week I decided on making a questionnaire. I also tried to create the questions which I think are suitable for my research. However, I faced a lot of difficulty in the process because I realized that elderly are a very hard target audience and it’s going to be hard to make them understand the meaning of UX design. I tried to finalize my questions and created the form. At first I planned on using another site and not google form because I was going to create questions that lead to different numbers depending on the answers. However I realized that most of them are paid sites, so I tried my best to make it work in google form.
I tried my best to share it as early as possible because I thought that this week was submission. In the process I struggled so much and I have had mental breakdown several times because of the amount of stress I’m getting from this task. I noticed that the questions that I made were not good enough, I’m also having a hard time trying to find people that are willing to help me. I'm in a dilemma whether I should change the questions or make a new questionnaire. However if I make a new questionnaire I know I won’t be able to get as many respondents again.
Since there is an extension week, I’m feeling more determined to get more respondents. I started to go through an online game and visit them one by one to help me with this project. I was thinking of doing an interview but then I realized that I wouldn’t be able to complete it because I didn’t get to find elderly person that is willing to do the interview.
This week was very hectic, so I decided to just focus on the data sorting. There is so much datas to sort and analyze to the point that I needed to ask for my friend’s help. I did not expect that I would end up finalizing so much datas. I won't be able to finish it this week.
