COLLABORATIVE DESIGN PRACTICE - TASK 3: RAPID PROTOTYPING

Collaborative Design Practice

For this task, we were instructed to make the prototype for the final.

The prototype is the smaller version of the final sculpture. The prototype that we make should be based on the chosen concept by GSK.

RESEARCH

Before getting the feedback from GSK, we decided to get started first so we can save time since the deadline is in week 6. We decided to go with the "Wave of Waste" idea.

A few days later, we got feedback from GSK. The feedback basically says that we need to focus more on greenhouse gases. After reading the feedback from GSK, we did research regarding the impact of medicinal waste on marine life. We also did research about greenhouse gases and how they affected the earth.

PROCESS

Week 4:

In week 4, we decided to meet on Sunday and started by removing the medicines from the packs. It surprisingly took so much time but we had 5 people with us at that time so we managed to get a few blister packs.

This is the number of medicines that we managed to separate. After collecting enough blister packs, we made small fish and started to think of how to make the other sea creatures.

We decided to go with the "Wave of Waste" idea and we were thinking of making it using PVC pipe in the middle and cardboard in both the upper and bottom sides to support hanging fishes and waves.

This is how we intended the prototype to look like. We then call it a day and decided to continue the next week.

Week 5:

This week we just got the feedback from GSK. We were really confused since the company seem to like our idea very much but at the same time told us that the focus of the message is not marine life. GSK also mentioned adding something that is related to greenhouse gases.

At first, we decided on continuing our prototype but hearing the feedback made us stuck. So we decided to sketch new ideas so we can propose them to Ms. Lilian and ask her for suggestions.

These were us having mind block. We just drew stuff on our iPad until we came up with ideas. We also looked through Pinterest multiple times.

In the end, we came up with 2 final sketches that we are going to propose.

The first sketch is basically the original idea but adds the tree on top of it. The tree is a mangrove tree and the roots will be connected to the fish. Since based on research, fishes do hide under the mangrove roots. The wave will still represent a clean and dirty ocean to make people aware. The objective is to make it related to greenhouse gases as GSK suggested us.

This is a completely new idea. In the middle is our earth with 2 human faces that breathe circular air around it. In the air, we will explain the breathing cycle. The big circle caging the earth is the sun as if the air is trapped inside. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of this idea since firstly, it is too hard for the audience to understand and secondly, it is too complicated to make.

Week 6:

In week 6 we all looked worried since the deadline is literally on Friday and we had not made anything at all. We quickly came to Ms. Lilian for her suggestion and she agreed with the first one. However, she also mentioned paying attention to the size since the max height is 7 inches and the max width is 10 inches so it would be better to occupy the width more.

we did not want to waste the time since the deadline was close so we quickly came up with a new sketch and we agreed to do something like this.

Ms. Lilian said okay so we proceed to make the prototype on that day as well.

We decided to use the bottle as the trunk and wire for the roots and branches. To make the roots thicker, we wrapped them again with paper. In the picture, I was trying to make small fish to be tied in strings.

This is how they plan to make the leaves. They want to combine all the materials into more or less tree looks and add blister packs on top. Personally, not a big fan of this idea since it looks really ugly I think. The branch was so thin and the leaves will look too messy.

I noticed that at that point, Tressa and Sea just wanted to get it done quickly since we had no time. But I couldn't bare looking at the ugly tree. So me and Devina got an idea of how to change it. We sure only had little time, but we tried out best to make it quick.

This is how we wanted the branches and the tree to look like. Devina made the tree and I cut the blister packs and attached it to the branches afterward. I think it looks very pretty. Though it kind of looks like flowers, completely better than the previous idea.

After completing everything, we attach the branch and tree to the trunk. It started to look nice but we only had one day left to complete the prototype.

The next day I was not able to come because I had a class. So the least that I could do to help was cut more blister packs at home and deliver them before my class. But I was told about the progression and I think it looked pretty in the end.

They added corals and colors. I personally don't really like the colors, they look really messy and unplanned. It was true though, we did not plan this through enough since we did not have much time. After making the reefs, they also attached the fish to the string and also the waves.

This is the end result. I think it's not bad. Wish could be improved more especially since I can't see the fish at all. But overall, it looks great and I'm really proud of my teammates. They all helped a lot and managed to deliver the best.

FEEDBACK

Week 5:

GSK gave the feedback in the middle of us making the prototype which made us confused on what to do next. Here is the feedback:

From what I get, GSK wanted us to not focus on marine life too much but also on greenhouse gases. They wanted us to create 2 waves, and not combine the dirty and clean part in 1 wave.  They also wanted us to add a bin at the bottom of the dirty wave.

Week 6:

Ms. Lilian gave us feedback about our sketches and chose the first one since the second one sounds more complicated and GSK already liked the "Wave of Waste" idea. Ms. Lilian also mentioned that it is best not to completely scrapped the idea and just improvise from it. She also said not to always listen to what the company said especially if the feedback is not a good idea.

Ms. Lilian also mentioned paying attention to the size of our prototype since the width is going to be longer than the height. After making a new sketch, she agreed to it and we proceed.

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

Week 4:
Start cutting more blister packs for the fish. Continue the prototype and make it look prettier.

Week 5 :
Find a new idea that covers GSK's feedback. Ask for Ms. Lilian's suggestion and finish it right on that week too.

Week 6:
Proceed with the final sculpture

SUBMISSION

REFLECTION

I feel like I went through some roller-coaster emotions during this task. At first, it started off great, I felt nice getting to know new friends like Sea, Tressa, and Shaocheng. We also watched stranger things together while opening up the medicines. We then continued making the "Wave of Waste" and I was having lots of fun during the process as well. However, the moment we got stuck after the feedback, the situation became rather tense. I realized that Tressa was really stressed since she also had a dancing exam and other work to do at that time. I would not blame her for getting frustrated over it and it might or might have not affected her mood during our meeting. No problem at all, I completely understand how she felt. Even I was really stressed during that time since my parents came and I had to entertain them while finishing the project. However, I am still grateful since everyone was trying their best and they all gave out nice ideas. We had meaningful discussions and everyone was always present. Overall, though it was tough and tiring, I am happy to make new friends.
