Task 4 - Testing the End Product and Iterative Design

For this task, we were instructed to make the final sculpture based on the prototype and the feedback given.

The sculpture's maximum size should be 10 feet wide, 7 feet tall, and 2 feet depth. We should also count the number of blister packs and inhalers used for the sculpture and the budget cost.

RESEARCH

Most of the research we did here was looking for references and ideas through Pinterest. We also did the research for the color palette and agreed on the colors blue, pink, and purple.

PROCESS

Week 7:

In week 7, Ms. Lilian gave us feedback on the prototype that we have made. She said that we need to slow down with the color and focus more on the wave since it was the original idea. I would agree with her since I think the tree in the prototype is kind of stealing attention. Aside from that, the wave part looks too messy and it was hard to spot the fish and coral.

After hearing the feedback, on Monday, we agreed on a color palette, which is blue, pink, and purple. We also started opening the blister packs and arranged them based on their shapes and types.

We also cut the cardboard for our base based on the maximum size for the width and depth.

On Wednesday we continued working on opening the blister packs and arranging them. Some of us also started making the wave and the base. I tried to count the blister packs to make it easier to count at the end.

On Thursday I could only come for a bit because I had a family dinner. But we continued with cutting the PVC pipe and putting it in our base. We put bunch of PVC pipe under the cardboard so it is able to stand properly.

Here is what the base looks like in the end. We also put the PVC pipe for the trunks and the roots.

Week 8:

Well, week 8 was hell.

We agreed on coming every day from 10 am to 6 pm. At first, I thought it was too much since we also had to do other modules' work. But, anyway...

On Monday, we started making sea creatures. We made a few fish when we did the prototype so we just needed to follow the same instruction. I tried to make the turtle but failed really bad apparently. We also started to spray-paint some of the fish, seaweeds, and waves.

On Tuesday, we started to connect the previous PVC pipe to the trunk and cover it with paper.

While me and Devina covering the trunks, Sea made the bottom part and cover some parts with ruffled papers to make it look like rocks. The uneven surface also makes it look more natural.

However, we had an issue in the middle of the process. The electricity did not work and we could not continue the work. So we had to move the stuff outside to plug the glue gun. Kind of embarrassing to be honest.

While Sea stuck the rocks, Devina, Shaocheng, and I made the branches. We rolled up the paper and Shaocheng covered it again with wire to make them stronger.

Tressa also colored more fish.

On Wednesday, We tried to hang the branches and added more roots. We attached them using tape and a glue gun for double protection. After that, we tried to cover the surface using blister packs and the trunks using aluminum foil.

While doing that, Shaocheng and Tressa also helped by cutting and shaping the leaves. After getting enough, we spray-painted the color green.

Here is our progress for that day. I think the tree looks very pretty.

On Thursday, we continued covering the tree with aluminum. Tressa did the coral and also colored them while the rest made more leaves. We tried to attach the leaves to a ruffled paper to make more volume since the tree is going to look bald if we just attach the leaves to the branch.

Me and Devina also cut more laminated plastic for the wave and burnt them to make it cripple.

This is after Sea spray-painted the tree and the surface. I think it looks very pretty.

On Friday, we thought we were going to finish it. We made the waves and attached the corals and fish.
We found difficulty when making the waves. We planned on making tubes with clear and colored laminated paper and putting fish inside.

However, after finishing the tube, we realized that it is going to be really hard to shape. So we agreed on making it flat and uneven so the wave looks more natural and easier to shape. We also made the dirty waves and filled them with blister packs.

We plan on making the part where the tree stands the dirty part, and the one on the side the clean part where all the fishes and coral stands. Therefore, we attached the clean wave to the clean part and the dirty wave to the dirty part.

On the last day, it was completely finished. I could only come for a bit because I had a plan that day. I helped by cutting more leaves since apparently, we needed more. I also helped to attach the hanging sea creatures.

At first, I thought the bottom parts will look messy because it was not based on a color palette and it literally contains every color possible. But on second thought, it looks pretty good.

Here is the end product:

Week 9:

In week 9 we had a presentation with GSk. Though it was only the leader, Tressa. I would not say the presentation went that smoothly but it ended okay. But in the end, we did not get chosen. A little bit disappointed but I had a feeling already. I knew that in the end, hard work is not enough, we have to work smart.

Here are some of the pictures that we took:

FEEDBACK

Week 7:

Ms. Lilian told us that our prototype looks different from the original wave idea. It focuses more on the tree rather than the wave. She suggested that we make the tree smaller or make the wave bigger so the attention will divert back to the wave. She also told us to slow down with the color and decide on a color palette.

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

Week 7:
Start opening the blister packs and arrange them based on shapes. Continue making the sculpture.

Week 8 :
Finish the sculpture and prepare the presentation.

REFLECTION

Week 8 was super tiring. We planned to come every day from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and I thought that it was too much. Turned out, we barely had time. We had to continue until Saturday. We found lots of technical difficulties in the middle of the progress but due to limited time, we did not get to fix most of them. I was not so sure either why we did not stick to the color palette for the sea creatures but oh well it still looks pretty. Most of the time made the sculpture while watching stranger things so it can be less boring. The thing that I am really grateful for is making new friends. I have never talked to Sea, Tressa, and Shaocheng before, and being in the same group as them was nice. We get to know each other more.

I was really worried on week 8 because my energy was literally drained for CDP. I did not have time to do other modules and ended up sleeping at 4 am. I came to CDP always bringing panadol just because it was really tiring to do physical work while not getting enough sleep. But seeing all of my groupmates working hard, gave me strength. I was happy working with them since they always try their best. Although not going to lie, I was quite disappointed knowing that we did not get chosen especially after all the hard work that we had gone through. But in the end, I am still grateful for this opportunity.
